Location: Waiariki Institute of Technology's Waipa Campus

Schedule: The Certificate is taught over 1 year. The programme runs Monday through to Thursday of each week with classes and workshops starting at 8.30am and finishing at 3.30pm., or part-time equivalent

This is the ideal qualification for people wanting to enter the Wood Manufacturing sector with real skills and knowledge.

  • Work experience in a Saw Mill, a Timber Machining Plant and a Saw Shop are included in the programme.
  • This Certificate is designed for people who are working in or about to enter the Wood Manufacturing industry to develop their knowledge and operational competence.
  • The purpose of this Certificate is to ensure that operators in the wood manufacturing industries can perform duties responsibly, safely and efficiently; and contribute to continuing productivity improvements.
  • The Certificate has core skills units that address environmental and health and safety issues; introductory continuous improvement techniques; contextualised teamwork and communication development and operational skills in Timber Machining, Saw Doctoring and Saw Milling.

Graduates will be able to:

- demonstrate the fundamental knowledge and skills required of employees within the wood manufacturing industry;
- understand employment, and health and safety issues;
- apply introductory skills in individual sectors according to chosen specialist strands; and
- perform duties responsibly, safely and efficiently, and contribute to continuing productivity improvements.

Programme Content

Wood Manufacturing Core Skills: workplace health and safety, environmental issues in wood manufacturing industries, business basics in a wood manufacturing industry, process techniques used on a wood manufacturing work site, Take and record measurements and make calculations in wood manufacturing, systems and techniques used to work efficiently in wood manufacturing, hazard identification and risk assessment procedures in the workplace and the investigation of wood manufacturing production issues.

Saw Milling: principles of saw milling, timber grading, work experience in the Waipa Saw Mill.

Saw Doctoring: principles of saw doctoring, knowledge of saw grinder application and operation, knowledge of grinding for saw doctoring, timber machining and finger jointing, knowledge of saw tooth profiles in saw doctoring, work experience in a Saw Shop.

Timber Machining: knowledge of Timber Machining, Set Cutters into Cutterheads, Operate a planer, work experience in a planer shop.

Other: mechanical engineering systems used in wood manufacturing industries, principles of wood drying, knowledge of wood preservation.
