Short Course Certificate in Introduction to GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and GPS (Global Positioning Systems)The GPS course is a mix of both practical and theory designed to show the correct use of handheld GPS. This course is taught at a level where there are no expectations of participants having any understanding or knowledge about how GPS works.
Participants include - School Students, General Public, Foresters, any other interested persons. The course includes the use of GPS software as well as up and downloading data (Waypoints and Trackpoints) and the customisation and upload of map to your GPS receiver. The course also covers aspects of Map Datum’s, Projections and coordinates. A course book is provided which covers all aspects of the course which is designed to give farmers, forestry personnel, fisherman etc.. an understanding of using small hand held GPS units and the possible errors from incorrect use of the GPS. This course will lead to the unit standard 18615 - Demonstrate Use of GPS For Commercial Forestry (this unit standard is generic and can be applied to any situation where GPS is used). There's an introduction to Map Datum’s and Projections; the GPS network (Satellites etc..) so that participants will understand how the whole System actually works!! We then carry out small practical exercises to show how the GPS receiver works and then upload and download waypoints and trackpoints to and from a GPS - PC combination. Participants may bring their own GPS units, although they will be provided for the duration of the course.
