Forestry Courses
This Level 2 short course provide's students with an understanding of the role of forestry and wood products, the impact of using wood products on the environment, and uses and suitability of wood products for end use.
This part-time course is particularly suited for carvers, wood-turners, cabinet makers, architects, those in the building and forestry industries, and others generally interested in understanding the characteristics of wood. Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with Waiariki’s Academic Regulations

Course Content - WPRO.2033
The course provides an overview of wood product solutions for uses such as:
- Wood product solutions: Wood in service
- Building materials
- Factors affecting wood properties (Definitions, measurement, and calculation)
- Introduction to wood products (timber, panels and LVL)
- Sawmilling
- Timber drying - how, what happens and why?
- Moisture content requirements for different markets
- Glues and Glued wood products: Plywood, LVL, MDF, Particleboard
- Environmental properties of wood: Heat, decay, insects, wood preservation, Coatings,
- Wood: the sustainable material
- Back to the beginning: Resource to final product: Log quality and log grading, log allocation to process.
