A pretty good start and overview, with some fatal mistakes to match.
"Ax Men" started on TV3 last night in New Zealand and the series will continue on Wednesday nights from here on in.

The good points -

* Cable logging. The show made an effort to educate as well as entertain and did a very good job in this respect.
* Hardcase workers. While the Americans were mainly white guys, their personalities reflected a wide number of NZ loggers as well.

The not so good point -

* Safety. In New Zealand workers must wear hi-visibility gear and safety equipment. The only reflective gear the Ax Men were wearing was their helmets - which weren't fitted properly anyway!
* Tree felling (1). All workers in the forest must wear appropriate clothing. Helmets with visors, safety chaps, hi vis vests/tops as well. It is no wonder people are killed - it is because they can't be seen!
* Tree felling (2). A lack of technique. Admittedly the contractors were wanting to move fast and extract logs as quick as they could. However there was a lot of lost value through bad technique.

Overall rating - 8/10.

It is great to see an industry that is so vital to NZ's economy on the TV - even if it is a North American program.

I look forward to what the rest of the series brings!
