08.05.2009 - Wood Manufacturing Block Course Learning

Shane Bennett shares his learnings from the 'Wood Enhancements' and 'Process Analysis' block courses
The first week was 'Wood Enhancement' with Hank Bier. The course covered the what, how and why of wood enhancement. The benefits and costs of using and wanting to develop wood enhancement products. There were heaps of practical experiments to do with structural wood such as - wood density, the effects of water on wood products, measuring of stiffness.

The second week was with Johann Betz. The focus was on "Process Analysis'. Johann focussed on the practical applications in the wood industry.
The class included site visits to a sawmill and a plywood mill. The students implemented delay time studies and MOP's (multi observation point studies). MOP's help determine problem areas and bottlenecks within a manufacturing operation.

Shane really enjoyed the practical elements of Hank's class with the hands on experiments etc, and the chance to apply the learning's from Johann in a real time operation.
