On Friday we were very fortunate to ba able to attend a demonstration of some high tech forestry equipment.
Two contractors were on hand - Shane Hooker and Karl Schwitzer. Shane carries out a tree recovery process and collects leftover residues (i.e. those parts of the trees that can't be turned into longs, pulp or paper) and sells them to the energy company's to turn into wood chip. The chips are then converted into pellets which are burnt in wood pellet fires.
Karl operates european machinery in harvesting operations that enables him to safely and quickly fell and remove trees from steep landscape where traditional machinery is unable to go. One such example was the Kaiser Spyder that operates on wheels c.f. the traditional tracks based approach.
We would to offer a HUGE thanks to the guys and also to EECA and The University of Canterbury for organising such a great day.
