17.03.2010 - Tuaropaki Site Visit

Sustainable Energy heads down to Taupo for the day
The Sustainable Energy students travelled down to Taupo on Tuesday 16th to view geothermal power production and the uses of it in a commercial setting.

The day started with a visit to the Mokai #1 powerstation that produces enough megawatt power to run a medium sized city. We were shown around the plant and had a great discussion time with the gentlemen from Mighty River Power who operate the plant.

In the early afternoon we visited the Greenhouses where the geothermal energy is used alongside solar energy for the growing of vegetable plants. There are 12ha of greenhouses filled with tomatoes and capsicums.

The day was fantastic and the Sustainable Energy students would sincerely like to thank the Tuaropaki Trust for allowing us to visit.
