17.09.2009 - Research Seminar

Prof Cris Brack and ANU student Jie-Lian Beh give great presentations!
Today saw the first in-house research seminar for the Forestry School.

Jie-Lian Beh presented some of her initial findings from her research into soil depths. Jie-Lian's research is primarily base don Pinus Radiata trees. By measuring the diameter of the stem some conclusions can be made about the depth of the soil. Trees grow differently depending upon the depth of soil they are growing in.

Jie-Lian has carried out mesurements in Canberra, Mt Gambier and Tasmania in Australia.

Prof Brack gave some examples of new forest inventory technology and forest operations machinery.

This included LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) which uses laser scanning to measure different things such as quantity, depth and the height of forests. The data is then processed to establish which parts of the forest are growing better than others and which parts are more ready for harvest.

The technology display was exciting and we look forward to seeing the examples on display in New Zealand.
