Tutor Euan McLachlan has been farming for over 20 years, most of that managing farms in Taupo. After leaving school, he began working on the family farm as well as a brief stint at Fletcher Wood Panels.
With his young family (two boys and a girl), he moved onto managing a station, running commercial ewes and pure Angus cattle. His family has always had an interest in Angus cattle, as his grandfather and uncle houe a stud in the Wairarapa. Euan produced some of the highest-priced Angus weaner steers in the country, selling mainly to the FiveStar feedlot in Ashburton each year.
Euan and his wife, Karen founded a Southdown Sheep stud in 1992 & were successful at winning many shows, including Royal Show classes. They sold commercial and stud rams to clients throughout the country for over 20 years, and Euan, who is qualified to do international judging, has judged sheep for just as many years.
He and his wife have also bred through a Berkshire & Duroc pig stud with progency selling all over the country. He enjoys breeding good stock of all description, including rare breeds of chicken!
Euan has served as the Deputy Chairman at the Taupo Saleyards and enjoys cooking, gardening and archaeology.
Last year he completed a short course in Farm Staff Management with AgITO. He become interested in the way future farmers were being educated, so he decided to apply for his current position to have the opportunity to pass on his knowledge to others.
