Student Profiles
Simon Honour
My name is Simon Honour and I am a part of the 2009 Waiariki Academy of Sport (WAOS), and am currently studying for a Diploma in Forest Management at Waiariki.I grew up in Rotorua and in my early teen years I started mountain biking. I spent hours in the forest in Rotorua training and competing. I have also travelled around the country from the top of the north to the very bottom of the South Island. I race competitively on different forest tracks. This is where my love for the outdoors grew. The last five years I have been road cycling competitively, and have represented New Zealand in Australia and Canada on two occasions, having some great successes. My grandfather Knut Bergseng was well known in the forest industry and was responsible for establishing the Timber Industry Training Centre (TITC) in Rotorua. He may also be the reason for my passion for the forests and forestry. I have spent the last five years at Rotorua Boys High School and in my last year there I was a part of the prefect team. This was a great privilege and I learnt many things from it. Also in my last year I took forestry as a class to see what it was all about and loved it. From there I had to decide what I was going to do the following year and decided to join Waiariki and do the Diploma in Forest Management. I have enjoyed it hugely so far this year and am looking forward to the next two years at Waiariki doing the course. |
