Student Profiles

Growing up in Fiji, Amelia Waqanibau knew she wanted to work in forestry. She seized the chance to work in the forestry department in Fiji as soon as the opportunity arose.

Wanting to further herknowledge, Amelia was encouraged by her work mates to study at Waiariki Institute of Technology as it would lead to a good career opportunity.

“Studying towards a Bachelor of Applied Management (wood processing) at Waiariki Institute of Technology was a great stepping stone. A lot of my work mates have attended here and they had nothing but positive feedback. I have not regretted the decision to study here in the least. I am really enjoying my study and finding it worthwhile.”

Upon arrival in New Zealand the beautiful scenery and country landscape took Amelia's breath away. The local people and Fijian community are so friendly it makes her feel like she is still in Fiji, she says. Amelia has been at Waiariki for over a year and has already completed eight courses. She is thoroughly enjoying the experience and information she is learning. She enjoys business communication the most as it covers everything she wants to learn.

“I learned a lot from doing business communication. This paper really helped me with all my other courses. Communication is our life and, without communication, schools, organisations, businesses, ideas and relationships suffer.”

Amelia will return to Fiji and work for the government in the forestry department when she has finished her degree. She aims to utilise her new knowledge to grow the productivity of the local forest industry.

“I will return to Fiji as the Fijian government sponsored my study. I will share with them what I have learned here. I have an obligation to go back and serve my country.”
