WR2989Certificate in Turf Maintenance and Management


 The certificate is for people working or intending to work in the sports and amenity turf industry. It provides the knowledge and skills for the maintenance of turf areas, and the practical application of maintenance tools and equipment that are essential for competence in the turf industry at an operational tradesperson level.

Compulsory courses cover essential elements of turf care applicable to all sectors of the turf industry. Electives offer the opportunity to select courses relevant to the student’s own sector or enterprise, and cover the year-round turf maintenance requirements applicable to specific sports codes, the safe application of agrichemicals, the structure of the turf industry, and other areas relating to turf maintenance and care. Electives in business skills, communication, computing, forestry and a range of other skill areas can also be studied.

This qualification can lead on to turf management at a supervisory level and further study on the National Certificate in Turf Management (Level 4 or 6) or the National Certificate in Horticulture (Level 4) (Amenity Horticulture).

Graduates will be able to:
- undertake year-round care and maintenance of turf areas;
- safely use and maintain tools and equipment required for turf maintenance;
- demonstrate knowledge of pests, weeds and diseases common to turf areas and the application of appropriate control methods;
- understand the safe application of agrichemicals;
- prune amenity trees and shrubs;
- safely use tractors, motorcycles and all terrain vehicles’
- understand health and safety requirements and apply safe work practices; and
- pursue an area of interest.

  • A total of 30 credits from any Waiariki course(s) at Level 2 or above. This can include courses listed in the Options List for this qualification.

    NOTE: A minimum of 15 credits at Level 4 or above must be achieved from either optional or elective courses to meet the requirements of this qualification.
